City council approved $500,000 for the improvement of tennis courts at Riverside, Edgemoor, and McAdams parks.

Surfaces on tennis courts have inch deep cracks, fences and nets are broken, and light posts look unstable in the wind. The money for improvements will be used for fixing the problems and resurfacing outdoor tennis courts at the three parks.

"If we don't do something now those cracks will grow and grow and grow. And they'll make them unplayable," said Doug Kupper, Wichita Parks and Recreation Director.

A total of 27 outdoor courts will be available for tournaments and events organized by the U.S. Tennis Association and the Missouri Valley Tennis Association.

"If we don't do it and don't start right now, we will not be able to apply for tournaments. We'll lose a whole year's revenue and we'll get behind the eight ball as far as applying in the next round," said Sue Schlapp, City Council Member.

The Parks and Recreation department expects improvements to be completed in time for tournaments by early summer.
