UPDATE: A fire to blame for killing two men overnight, started on the deck of the west Wichita home, investigators said.

The fire broke out in the 8600 block of W. 9th Street around 1:20 a.m.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames showing from the back part of the home. Gusty south winds fueled the fire, making it difficult for firefighters to battle the blaze.

First responders found a 51-year-old man inside the home unconscious. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment where he later died. Officials said the man returned to the house to try and rescue his father.

Capt. Stuart Bevis, Wichita Fire Investigations, said crews later found a 75-year-old man dead inside the home once the fire was under control.

The double fatal fire is the third and fourth death of 2011. Investigators worked four fire fatalities last year, Bevis said.

Three other people managed to escape safely.

The fire caused about $100,000 in damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
