The Wichita City Council votes to send the water rate increase proposal to the public.
The council is debating a 3% residential and an 8% commercial rate increase. The water department says it needs extra funding to help maintain an old system and to recharge the aquifer.
"It's because we have some fixed costs, some projected costs for maintenance so it doesn't continue to degrade," said public works director Alan King.
The council voted in favor of sending the complicated proposal to public meetings so residents can better understand where the money will go.
