The watch party for Sheriff Bob Hinshaw and his supporters was an emotional roller coaster Tuesday night.
Early numbers started to come in just before 8:30 showing Jeff Easter in a dramatic lead. We spoke with the sheriff shortly after he saw those early results and at that time, Sheriff Hinshaw told us he thought the race was over.
“That's what this whole process is about giving voters a choice. We put the information out, they made a choice. While there are still some precincts coming in, I think the gap is wide enough that it's clear the voters of Sedgwick county want Jeff Easter to be their next sheriff, and I’m good with that,” Sheriff Hinshaw said.
But it turned out, those numbers were from advanced ballots only. The Sedgwick County Election Commissioner told us a computer error on a form, made it appear most of the precincts' votes were in when they were not.
After the computer error was realized, Sheriff Hinshaw said he planned to wait for the final numbers. But at about 10:30, the numbers hadn't changed for a while and Sheriff Hinshaw decided to go home for the night.
He told us he wasn't going to make any more announcements until the morning, when the final count was in.
