Wichita State University has not constructed new student housing since the 1960s, but it is ready for a new building now. The new residence hall is proposed to be available by Fall 2014.

"We feel this is going to be something that when we talk to prospective students and parents, they'll compare this type of housing to what they see at other places that they go to," said Wade Robinson, Vice President for Campus Life and University Relations.

The university is currently seeking bids from developers to build a 700-bedroom residence hall for freshmen on campus. With the construction of a new building, Brennan Halls and Wheatshocker Apartments would no longer house students.

Some students voiced their concern regarding the new building which would be located on the parking lot, south of Cessna Stadium.

"Adding something so people could live closer, that would make sense. But if they're building something just for freshmen and still shuffling people around, then that's not making any extra space and you're sacrificing parking a lot," said Sterling Spencer, student.

The new hall would replace Fairmount Towers, which currently houses freshmen. Robinson said the Towers would be used for upperclassmen housing.

The new building would have units designed in a 4-2-1 configuration of four individual bedrooms, two shared bathrooms and one common area. It would also include a dining hall, lounge areas and laundry on each floor, and two classrooms that can accommodate up to 50 students per classroom.

According to the bid request, the university will be responsible for additional surface parking for student’s vehicles. The final location will be determined during the site planning for the new residence hall and will be coordinated with the campus master plan.

The new residence hall will cost approximately $50-55 million. It will be paid for with rent revenues.
