Compared with last year, the number of people who have died in traffic accidents in Wichita in 2011 has seen a dramatic increase. So far, 13 people have died as a result of Wichita car crashes since the beginning of the year.

The Wichita Police Department is stressing its concern for the spike in traffic deaths this year and is reminding citizens about driving safety.

Nearly all of the fatal crashes in 2011 involve either inattentive driving, careless driving, or alcohol, said Deputy Chief Nelson Mosley.

The department understands that crashes are going to happen every day, but with a little extra preparation and attention paid to your driving, the department hopes to raise awareness about the problem and curb fatalities for the rest of the year.
