A seminar in Wichita designed to get people motivated turned into a discouraging experience for many. Hundreds of would-be audience members ended up leaving angry when they were turned away from the event featuring speakers like Rudy Guiliani, Colin Powell, Lou Holtz and Bill Cosby.
It looked and sounded like some sort of rock concert. Instead, what many call the movers and shakers of Wichita heard from top name motivational speakers. Outside, a not-so-positive crowd gathered. By 8:00 a.m. the line was getting long, and ticket holders frustrated.
Fourteen thousand people were expected for the Get Motivated event at Intrust Bank Arena. Get Motivated was responsible for selling the tickets, and officials there said they did not overbook the arena. When fire officials refused to allow any more people inside, those still standing in line were offered a free shuttle ride to Century II where they could watch the seminar via satellite. Others, too upset and angry, simply went home.
Doors for the event opened at 6:45 a.m. and there was no reserved seating. Tickets bought in advance ranged in price from as low as $1.95 each to $49. When purchasing in advance, ticket buyers had a choice of buying their ticket for the Intrust or Century II venue.
