There's a reason employees at Spirit Aerosystems are celebrating in a big way. Tuesday's roll-out type ceremony was not for a plane, but for a part. And not even a large part at that.
The excitement was for part work that represents how Spirit is spreading its own wings in securing aviation parts work from around the globe. The pylon, built strictly for testing purposes, is a part needed for Canada-based Bombardier's new jetliner, the C-Series. Spirit's leaders say securing work for the part demonstrates just what a global company and a major supplier Spirit has become in its six years of operation.
Bombardier made a bold move when it launched the C-Series a few years ago. The C-Series are single aisle jetliners in the 100 to 149 seat segment competing with Boeing's 737 and the Airbus A-320. Orders for the C-series are picking up after a slow start. The more sales made, the more pylons Spirit builds. While this first pylon is for testing purposes, later comes a production ramp-up into work spaces being prepared now at Spirit. Pylons are part of Spirit's propulsion systems work, including nacelles and thrust reversers.
It is about a quarter of Spirit's total work. Bombardier's C-Series is expected to be delivered to customers in 2013.
