After the recent tornadoes in Reading, Kan. and Joplin Mo., Red
Cross was inundated by generous people wanting to volunteer. Red Cross requires training to make the biggest difference possible, and that training will be taking place soon.

In September, the American Red Cross Midway-Kansas Chapter is hosting its biannual disaster preparedness classes. The classes are for potential volunteers that want to help communities
prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters. Classes for the Disaster Action Team that respond
to local house fires will be held Sept. 6 – 10. Classes that focus on helping large quantities of
people like setting up shelters after a natural disaster will be Sept. 19 – 24.

“As we saw recently, it is important to have a strong base of volunteers to call upon when there’s
trouble,” said Bev Morlan, executive director for the American Red Cross Midway-Kansas
Chapter. “These classes will give volunteers the tools needed to respond to manmade disasters,
like house fires, and natural disasters such as tornadoes and hurricanes.”

The Red Cross volunteer base includes both everyone from retired individuals to those who are
currently working a full time job. The Red Cross will work with volunteers to make sure the skills
they learn can be used in the community while still working. Current volunteers have worked with
employers to receive the time off needed to respond to national disasters or volunteer with the
Disaster Action Team at night to keep from create a conflict with their work schedule.

The classes are free to the public. Potential volunteers looking to participate should be 18 or older
and should have a valid driver’s license. Class registration is required and can be found online at
www.midwaykansas.redcross.org or by phone at 219-4049. All classes take place at the chapter
building, 1900 E. Douglas, Wichita, Kan.

“Since March 31, nearly 30 volunteers from the Wichita area have been sent across the country
to help,” Morlan said. “These disaster classes give volunteers the training and resources to be
there when the public needs us.”
