The Dodge Literacy Magnet school is opening its new building to the public tonight. This, before the first day of school in the new building tomorrow. The $8.1 million structure is the first new building for the school in nearly 75 years.

The school features a new gym that acts as a storm shelter, a separate cafeteria, updated technology, an art room, music rooms, and perhaps the most important space in the literacy magnet school -- the library.

"This library can be the heart of the school because we're the literacy magnet," said Principal Janet Jump.

The school is the first finished after voters passed a $370 million bond issue issue in 2008. It replaces the old building that had little room for storage and in some wings was incapable of supporting central air conditioning.

"It just gives us the opportunity to really do even more for our kids in our community," said Jump.

Although, administrators say it's not just the building that makes the school what it is.

"We realize too, this school is mortar and bricks and we're so excited about it. We're ready to put the heart in the school and make it a place where kids and their families love to be," said Jump.
