A young boy testified in court Tuesday about trying to save his mother the day she was murdered. The deadly stabbing happened in July 2009, when police say Yusef Samad stabbed his ex-girlfriend Michelle Reed. Over the past two years, Samad has undergone several mental competency tests before being bound over for trial at a preliminary hearing Tuesday.
Police say the day Reed was stabbed, she ran from her home to a neighbor's for help. The neighbor reportedly called 911 but Reed died later at the hospital. Tuesday, neighbors who witnessed the scene that day said they were ready for closure in the case. This, as they recounted what they saw.
"I saw this woman laying over in his yard," said Daisy Ramsey, who lived across the street from Reed. "She went to get up and she fell back down, and that's when he said she'd been stabbed."
The memory of that day also remains clear for a boy who was just 12 years old that July day. Michelle Reed was his mother, and Tuesday he sat before the man charged with killing her to recount what he remembers.
"He busted the window and then that's when I got up and I ran in there and she was trying to open the front door," said the boy.
Reed's son says he and two other children were napping inside the home when his mother's ex-boyfriend, Yusef Samad, busted through his bedroom window and began attacking Reed. That's when the boy says he tried hitting Samad to protect his mom. When that didn't work, he says he went to the kitchen and got a knife, but he says his mother told him to leave.
"She was like 'Go outside,'" said the boy.
"Did you do as your mother told you?" asked the prosecutor.
"Yes," he replied.
Reed's son would only see his mother one more time as she ran for help, before crews rushed her to the hospital. Now, those who also witnessed the scene that day say it's time the person responsible is brought to justice.
"I hope that he gets punished for what he's done. I really hope that," said Ramsey.
The man charged with stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death will go to trial for murder.
