WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita Police continue to investigate a homicide after a man was found with a gunshot wound following a rollover crash yesterday.
On Wednesday, police identified the victim as 47-year-old Damon P. Williams.
Around 1 a.m. Tuesday in the 4400 block of East Harry, police responded to two separate calls in the area and found a green Ford Escort rolled over in the front yard of a home.
"To me, it sounded like somebody hit a car real hard. That's why I got up and looked outside to look at the cars to make sure that nobody was breaking into them. Then you seen cars start speeding off," said Amesha Ratcliff, lives near the scene.
Emergency crews freed the 47-year-old man from the car, and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He died a short time later.
During the investigation, they found that Williams had suffered a gunshot wound to the torso. They also found a bullet hole in the side of the car.
"I can't say what exactly killed him. I know there was a great deal of blood inside of the vehicle," said Lt. Todd Ojile, Wichita Police.
They believe the shooting happened just east of the crash scene, near the 4800 block of East Harry. Investigators do not know where Williams was going, but said he did not live in the area.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call police. This is the 13th homicide of the year in Wichita.
