The plans have been in place for a long time to make one of Wichita's most dangerous interchanges a little safer.

Tuesday night, engineers and KDOT employees were on hand to break down the I-235 and Kellogg interchange project for drivers and clear up any questions they have.

A year ago, KDOT revealed their entire plan to reconstruct the interchange. At Tuesday night's meeting they focused on the first phase which engineers say will eliminate a lot of the safety problems drivers see there.

Kim Scheidt's home near the I-235/Kellogg interchange has been in her family since 1964; so she's had a lot of experience dealing with traffic on that part of the highway.

“The only thing I don't like is having to merge on to 235 from Kellogg because if you hit it at the right time it's a disaster waiting to happen,” Scheidt said.

“There have been a lot of accidents when I was younger they had a car roll of it into the backyard,” Scheidt said.

That's why she says she's happy to see plans to make the area safer, even though KDOT needs to buy some of her land to move forward with the project.

“This right here is my property and they're just taking the corner,” Scheidt said.

The entire project has four phases and is expected to take decades to finish. The first phase should begin in 2015. The plan is to take out two of the clover leaf ramps there now and create new flyover ramps from southbound 235 to eastbound Kellogg and from northbound 235 to westbound Kellogg.

"This will eliminate some of that weaving problem we have where people are trying to get off or get on and it's a mess right now,” KDOT Public Affairs representative Tom Hein said.

Kim Scheidt tells us if it means an end to the traffic nightmare she's been dealing with for years,
she's happy to give up a corner of her property.

“It will be worth it I mean if it's for the safety of everybody to me, that's worth it after what I’ve seen through the years it will be a lot better,” Scheidt said.
