Hundreds of job seekers made their way to Salina Tuesday, hoping a job fair will open the door to a new career.

"We've had a great number of employers from different industries here, as far as health care, advanced manufacturing, communications. it's amazing the list of job openings we see today," said Debra Rodenbaugh, Kansas Department of Commerce.

More than 100 companies from all over the state offering information, interviews, and accepting applications. Hundreds of prospective employees looking for work, sifted through a variety of industries.

"I have a Master's Degree, but with today's economy, I have to be a little bit flexible and look a little broader than I would have looked before," said Patricia Stepanek.

Instead of doing the job search online, Stepanek and others took advantage of meeting with employers in person.

"It's more personable. You can ask questions at the individual booths, where the people who represent the companies, and get a better idea of it, and if it's a place you want to pursue a job at," said Stepanek.

"It's easier just to hand them your stuff and say a few words," said John Thornton.

"There's a broader range of people here that we get to meet and interact with, versus going out on a job site, or being out and talking to an employee that might have a reference. This gives us a little more one-on-one access to different types of people," said Gwen Aylward, Aflac, District Sales Coordinator.

Those may be people like Stepanek, who might turn into future employees.

"I met a couple at one table, where I hope they call me, because I really like the idea of working for their company. We'll have to wait and see what happens," said Stepanek.

Kansas ranks in the top ten states with the lowest unemployment rates.
