A man running from police got an unpleasant surprise from a Haysville homeowner on Monday.

"The guy picked the wrong driveway to dump off a stolen car in," said Linda Legg, whose son tackled the suspected thief.

Legg's son Michael was the homeowner who held the suspected thief in a headlock before police arrived.

Shortly before noon, a Corvette reported stolen out of Derby was found at a residence in the 1000 block of West 61st Street South.

Wichita Police officers watched a 30-year-old man leave the residence in the stolen vehicle. When police tried to stop the car, a 31-year-old woman exited the vehicle and the driver sped away, leading officers on a chase into a Haysville neighborhood.

The suspected car thief ditched the stolen vehicle at a residence near the intersection of Alexander Drive and Alexander Court in Haysville.

The homeowner began chasing after the suspicious driver to a residence in the 200 block of Alexander Drive.

"He physically assaulted the homeowner and tried to run but the homeowner tackled him and held him until officers arrived and took him into custody," said Lt. Joe Schroeder, Wichita Police.

Aaron Belcher was taken into custody for charges that included auto theft, evading police, and possession of a firearm by a felon. By Tuesday afternoon, Belcher had bonded out.

Inside the stolen car, police found loaded magazines. A police dog also found a loaded Glock handgun near the car.

Police said the car has been returned to the owner in Derby. No one was injured.
