The search continues for the suspect in Monday's shooting of a Butler County Sheriff's deputy, near US-54 and Santa Fe Lake Road.
Law enforcement officers are still looking for 41-year-old Jan Kilbourne.
Authorities believe Kilbourne has links to the Wichita, Hutchinson, and Liberal areas.
"I can't say 100-percent that he's out of the area," said Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet. "He is a survivalist, that he can live out in the wilderness. He has (done that) before out in the western part of the state."
Friends of Kilbourne, who were inside the car during the traffic stop, are still in shock of the shooting.
"It was surprising," said Graham Taylor, who was in the car with Kilbourne and his girlfriend, Tasha Kane.
"He said he was looking for a pack of cigarettes and then he just pulls out a gun and shoots him," said Kane.
The group was on their way to Hutchinson from the Rock, Kansas area, when they said they experienced car trouble and stopped in the parking lot of the Apac and Zernco businesses.
This morning, employees of Zernco saw the bullet hole on the side of their building as well as markings from the crime scene.
"It was just kind of crazy," said Scott Marko. "We did have a couple of people that were going to come into work (yesterday) and luckily we were alerted prior to them coming in about the incident."
The bullet that hit the deputy was stopped by his protective vest. The deputy is recovering at home and is on administrative leave at this time.
The sheriff said Kilbourne is considered armed and dangerous.
