Several Wichita families rang in the new year with a new addition to their family.
We met the first baby born at any Via Christi hospital New Year's Day. She was born at 2:30 in the morning and she was a New Year's surprise for her entire family.
The El - Nabbout family had plans to go to a new year's eve party. Instead, they took a trip to the hospital.
"Yeah it was a total surprise but a great gift for the new year so we are so thankful,” Reina El- Nabbout said.
The new parents' families flew in from Lebanon. They thought they were arriving way ahead of Reina's due date.
"Last time with my daughter they came a few hours after she was delivered so this time they wanted to make sure they'd be here before,” Bassem El-Nabbout said.
Reina and Bassem's families actually got to go to the new year's eve party. That's because Reina didn't tell them she was in labor.
"We didn't want to ruin the party for them because they were all dressed up and ready. So they came around ten. They had a good time and then had a good time with us,” Reina El-Nabbout said.
Leanna has a big sister. Natalia is almost two and dad says she's still adjusting to not being the baby anymore.
"I think she was happy to see her but I think she's a little bit jealous and in shock because that's the first time she sees me holding somebody else other than her,” Bassem El-Nabbout said.
Bassem says he's just happy that mom and baby are healthy.
He has already started planning ahead to make sure their new year baby doesn't get short changed on birthday celebrations.
"What we're going to do is probably celebrate the new year and then the next day do another celebration for her birthday so it will be twice,” Reina El-Nabbout said.
Leanna was the first baby born at a Via Christi hospital but not the first baby of the new year in Wichita. A little boy was born at 1:20 in the morning at Wesley hospital.
