Suspect In Garden City Fatal Stabbing Arrested In Wichita

On Tuesday, April 12, 2011, detectives with the Garden City Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for 31-year-old Fred Schmidt Jr., of Garden City for his involvement in a stabbing incident that happened in late March.

Schmidt and 25-year-old Jeffrey Nichols were involved in an altercation with one another on March 29th that ended in both men being stabbed. Schmidt received a minor wound and transported himself to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Nichols was found dead in a yard near where the stabbing occurred.

Assistance from the Wichita Police Department was requested and they arrested Schmidt at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of N. Woodchuck in Wichita.

Schmidt was brought back to Garden City where he was lodged in the Finney County Jail on allegations of murder in the 2nd degree, possession with the intent to sell hydrocodone, possession with the intent to distribute alprazalom, and use of a communication facility for drug transactions.

On Tuesday, March 29, 2011 around 1:30 a.m., officers of the Garden City Police Department were dispatched to St. Catherine Hospital in regards to a stabbing victim. The preliminary investigation determined two Garden City males, ages 25 and 31 were together at a residence in the 1900 block of Sloan St. when during an altercation with each other, both men were stabbed.

The 31-year-old male received a minor wound and transported himself to the hospital where he was treated and released. Officers responded to the area of the incident and found the 25-year-old dead in the yard of 1838 Koster St. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.

The victim in this case has been identified as 25-year-old Jeffrey Nichols of Garden City.

Garden City Police say two Garden City men, ages 25 and 31, were together at a residence in the 1900 block of Sloan St. when during an altercation with each other, both men were stabbed.

The 31-year-old male received a minor wound and transported himself to St. Catherine Hospital where he was treated and released at approximately 1:32 this morning.

Officers responded to the area of the incident and found the 25-year-old dead in the yard of 1838 Koster St.

The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made. The name of the victim is not being released until notification of the family can be made.
