New information today about some human remains found last week in Southwest Sedgwick County. A human skull was found near a creek bed near 13rd Street S. and 343rd Street W.

A couple of campers were going about their business last Friday night when they discovered the skull and immediately called authorities. A Wichita State University anthropologist is shedding new light on who the skull belonged to.

"We don't know if she was killed and dumped," said Sedgwick County Sheriff's Lieutenant Jay McLaurian. "We're trying to figure out that right now."

the skull was found along the banks of the Sand Creek in an isolated part of Sedgwick County west of Viola. Because of its isolation, investigators say a body could have been dumped there, but it also could have washed downstream from somewhere else. Only the skull was found.

"It's very challenging, but I'm quite sure that somebody out there knows some information or somebody out there that's missing a daughter or a sister that can come forward and help us identify this person," McLaurian said.

An anthropologist at WSU has examined the skull and believes it could have been sitting on the creek bank for up to 15 years.

"His preliminary findings show that it is a black female of African-American decent, from the ages of 18-25 years-old," McLaurian explained.

no missing persons reports from the Wichita area match that description. the sheriff's department has contacted other law enforcement agencies across the Midwest, searching for any other clues.

"Right now, we're trying to determine who the person is," McLaurian said. "That's why we're trying to reach out to the public once again for their help."

At the time the skull was found, searchers looked for any other bones that might have been nearby. they didn't find anything, but McLaurian says within the next few days, a new search team will be formed to search a wider area.
