The Wichita City Council unanimously approved a STAR Bond District for a proposed Fieldhouse near K-96 and Greenwich Road.
The developer plans to build a multi-sports athletic complex called the Good Sports Fieldhouse along with destination hotels and a retail center. It will offer numerous indoor sports courts, and facilities for wrestling, archerry, fencing, volleyball and basketball.
A STAR Bond district means the facility would be financed partly by state and local sales tax collected by the project. To qualify for STAR Bonds, the project must be a major tourism attraction to the area.
"The Good Sports Fieldhouse is a key component to that because with a 55,000 sq. ft., major multi-sport athletic facility, we'll be able to host regional and national youth sports tournaments," said Korb Maxwell, attorney for Good Sports Fieldhouse.
If the Department of Commerce approves the district, construction could begin as early as the fall.
