Three large aviation companies attract thousands of applicants to a 3-day job fair in Wichita.

Spirit Aerosystems is the one local company at the job fair. Spirit is hoping to hire a couple of hundred workers for jobs in Wichita and Tulsa.

From the length of the lines, it is obvious the need for a job is great. There have been more than 13,000 layoffs from local companies within the past couple of years.

And, while "there's no place like home" was a fine mantra for Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, except for the 200 Spirit jobs, these job seekers are finding out their best opportunities might be elsewhere.

The Boeing Company is also mining the Air Capital for talent. But the jobs they are looking to fill won't be in the Wichita area. Boeing is trying to fill jobs in the Puget Sound, Washington area.

Besides the prospect of a move, sometimes job applicants learn they need to upgrade their skills. The job fair continues Wednesday and Thursday. It is being held at teh Machinist's union district headquarters building at I-235 South and Meridian.
