The city of Augusta is removing and replacing equipment that is no longer safe for kids.

"They need somewhere to feel safe and to play and to have fun and socially interact," said Blake Apel, parent.

Apel and his daughter like to spend time at Play Park Pointe. He said that is one of only a few playgrounds safe enough for his 8-year-old.

"It's a very good playground compared to the other ones we have. Metal slides that scrape them up and old wood that's falling apart. So, having a playground, like this, real nice, it helps out a lot," said Apel.

On nice days, Play Park Pointe is filled with kids enjoying the equipment, but a few feet away, there is another playground with swing sets that have become deserted.

"I see some people go there for parties and it is sort of dangerous. I've heard and seen people get hurt on that playground," said Matt Remington, student from Augusta.

Over the next two years, the city plans to replace unsafe equipment at three playgrounds, located by the swimming pool, in the enclosed picnic area, and at Garvin Park. The equipment is no longer compliant with updated National Recreation and Park Association standards.

"This playground equipment is equipment that's been played on for many, many years. So, a lot of people just don't understand that today we have different standards than what they had 50 years ago," said Cy Ricker, public works superintendent for Augusta.

The city plans to spend about $100,000-$150,000 to replace equipment at Garvin Park and $30,000-$50,000 to replace equipment at the two smaller playgrounds.

"It's pretty easily justified when it comes down to safety for your little ones. You know, next generation, you've got to keep them safe," said Dustan Broom, parent.
