Four anti-abortion activists spoke in support of re-zoning the area of Kellogg and Bleckley, during the public agenda of the Wichita City Council today.

Currently, the Wichita-based nonprofit Trust Women Foundation Inc. operates a clinic in the building previously owned by abortion provider George Tiller.

Anti-abortion activists complain that the clinic is too close to the nearby residential neighborhood. They are also concerned of increased violence in the area with gun laws that allow concealed carry.

"At least put it way out, away from residential people so you don't have a chance of people being shot on the pro choice or pro life side," said Rob Rotola.

A speaker with Kansas Coalition for Life said there have been 18 incidents involving guns at the location from 2004 to 2009. He also admitted that his group has put up graphic signs in the area.

In February, the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission rejected a similar request from these groups.

The City Council took no formal action on this matter at today's meeting.

Abortion foes are resurrecting their efforts to use zoning laws to drive out a Wichita abortion clinic.

Representatives from four groups planned to ask the Wichita City Council on Tuesday to rezone the neighborhood around the South Wind Women's Center to prohibit abortions. A similar effort earlier this year to rezone the building itself was rejected by the planning commission.

Wichita-based nonprofit Trust Women Foundation Inc. opened a clinic earlier this year in the building owned by slain abortion provider George Tiller. The property had been used for medical purposes since 1937 and was zoned to allow a medical office when the abortion rights group bought it.

Representatives from Kansans for Life, Operation Rescue, World of Life Church and the Kansas Coalition for Life are on the council agenda Tuesday.
