A 72-year-old retired public employee from Wichita will never have to worry about finances again, now that he’s the single winner of a $12.2 million Hot Lotto jackpot. The winner, who asked his identity not be released, claimed his prize at Lottery headquarters in Topeka late Monday afternoon.
The long-time Wichita resident won his multi-million dollar jackpot with a $2 Hot Lotto Sizzler ticket that matched all winning numbers in the Saturday, November 29 drawing. The ticket was a Quick Pick, meaning the player let the computer pick the numbers for him. The winning numbers were: 7-14-22-24-38 Hot Ball 2.
"He showed up at our offices yesterday, and was very calm," said lottery spokesperson Sally Lunsford.
“I am extremely excited,” said the lucky winner, who plans to help out family and friends with his winnings, as well as giving some to his church.
The lucky ticket was sold at KC Gas and Grocery, located at 1161 N. Broadway in Wichita. For selling the jackpot-winning ticket, the store is eligible for a $2,500 bonus.
Store owner MD Rahman doesn't know who the lucky winner is, but says his store has had a good year with other customers winning much smaller lotto prizes.
The $12.2 million jackpot is the third largest ever claimed in the Hot Lotto game. The second largest was also claimed in Kansas when Lori Boyle of Independence won a $12.9 million jackpot in the July 4, 2007, drawing. Another Hot Lotto jackpot, for $5.26 million, was won in Kansas by a Pittsburg resident in the May 31, 2008 drawing.
“Since Kansas joined Hot Lotto in March of 2006, we’ve had three jackpot winners from our state, including two of the game’s largest. That’s impressive,” said Kansas Lottery Executive Director Ed Van Petten. “Hot Lotto seems to be a pretty lucky game for Kansas players.”
The latest jackpot winner has chosen to take his prize in cash, rather than an annuity of 25 payments over 24 years. With the cash option, he will receive $8,039,817, minus taxes. Mandatory federal withholding taxes of $2,009,954 (25%) and state withholding taxes of $401,991 (5%) will be deducted from the prize, leaving the winner with a check for $5,627,872.
Hot Lotto is played in 13 lottery jurisdictions: District of Columbia, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and West Virginia. Drawings are held Wednesdays and Saturdays. Plays cost $1. An extra $1 buys the Sizzler option, which pays triple on any prize won, except for the jackpot.
The jackpot for this Wednesday’s drawing returns to $1 million and will continue to grow until someone wins. For more information on Hot Lotto, and all Kansas Lottery games, please visit www.kslottery.com.
