A fire at a West Wichita apartment complex caused $250,000 in damage, fire officials said.
Wichita Fire Marshal Ed Bricknell said the fire at Raintree apartment complex started shortly before 2 a.m. on an upper floor balcony. He said the residents were sleeping, but were then woke up after hearing crackles from the flames.
By the time fire crews arrived, heavy flames and smoke were pouring out of the building.
Bricknell said crews were concerned that the fire could eventually break through the roof and Sedgwick County 911 dispatchers call for a second alarm. The fire was extinguished about 30 minutes later.
One apartment was damaged by the fire. Several others suffered smoke damage.
Investigators have not determined how the fire started, but they don't believe it's a case of arson.
