Council Considers Doubling Speeding Fines On Kellogg

Wichita could crack down on speeding drivers with a new state law.

The need for speed could soon cost drivers big bucks if they're caught pushing the speedometer above the legal limit along Kellogg.

Wichita police are hoping the city council will push for new state legislation this year making the highway into what's called a traffic safety corridor. That means getting a speeding ticket along this stretch of road would cost drivers double and there would be no option of diversion for first time offenders.

Some council members agree strict new laws are needed.

"Does anybody here go down Kellogg and drive the speed limit and see how many times people come up on your rear end and pass you like you're sitting still. I think it's ridiculous. I think it is a safety hazard," said council member Jim Skelton.

While police already focus on trapping speeding travelers here, officers say driving on Kellogg is still dangerous and deadly.

Last year there were 259 injury accidents and four fatalities on Kellogg. So far this year there have already been four more car crash deaths.

But some council members argue it's unfair to focus only on Kellogg when drivers also fly way over the speed limit on other Wichita highways.

And while they may be okay with higher fines, they can't quite go along with not allowing diversion for good drivers.

"Don't take away the opportunity from the individual who doesn't have a previous problem. Take away their opportunity to get diversion," said council member Paul Gray.

The council will likely vote in December whether to push for this new plan in the upcoming legislative session.
