It was a welcome home years in the making, after a Wichita woman and her dog are finally reunited. The dog went missing in Wichita two years ago. This past weekend, it landed at the Hutchinson Animal Shelter.
"That's the number one question everybody asks me is 'Where has she been?' And she's not telling me where she's been!" said Sara Ashurst, the owner.
So it will likely forever remain a mystery how 'Lexi B. Sooner' disappeared from Sara's backyard more than two years ago.
"It's hard to hold out hope with the amount of time that she was gone," said Ashurst.
But somehow Sara did hold out hope, because Lexi isn't just your average dog. Lexi is the dog Sara bought on her father's birthday after he passed away from cancer. She's also the dog Sara named with the same initials as her father in memory of him.
"It was like another loss on top of losing my dad, to lose her," said Ashurst.
But last weekend Sara received a call that the Hutchinson Animal Shelter had found Lexi. The shelter is an hour away from where Lexi first went missing in Wichita. It was an unlikely call, but it was one Sara had been waiting for.
"I think I was the only one that ever really expected that she might show up again," said Ashurst.
The shelter was able to contact Sara after scanning the back of Lexi's neck for a microchip, which they found. The chip held all of Sara's old information, including a back-up phone number. That back-up phone number was Sara's brother's number.
"It's such a nice story when they end up back home after so long," said Erin Willis of the Hutchinson Animal Shelter. "It's one of those things that just really makes us happy."
