Homeless Man Dies In South Wichita House Fire

A man that died in a south Wichita house was homeless, officials said.

Crews were called to the scene in 1500 block of S. Mosley around 7:15 pm. Thursday. Firefighters battled thick smoke and flames coming from the basement.

Due to deteriorating conditions, officials first started to fight the fire defensively, using a hose line to fight the fire. It was not until hearing screams coming from the home that crews made a rescue attack.

Firefighters pulled a 57-year-old man from the burning home. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. Authorities said the victim was a homeless man.

Fire investigators said the home was undergoing renovation, and that all utilities have been turned off. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The blaze caused about $50,000 in damage.

This is Wichita's 8th fire fatality in 2011.

A man has died after a house fire in south Wichita.

It happened at 7:15pm Wednesday in the 1500 block of South Mosley.

Neighbors reported hearing an explosion before noticing the fire.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the basement windows. Crews started fighting the fire defensively and took a hose line to extinguish the fire in the basement. Firefighters heard a victim and pulled him out of the house.

The man died while being transported to a Wichita hospital.

Wichita Fire and ATF are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Most of the damage was contained to the two-story house.
