A local doctor says thieves stole her identity and are now stealing from her brand new practice.

Dr. Meryl Miller and her husband's clinic has only been open about six months but ever since Dr. miller's wallet was stolen late last month, their practice has taken a hit.

"I mean it's already hurt us financially in terms of cash flow and being able to do the things that we want to do,” Dr. Meryl Miller said.

Miller says it happened while she was at the northwest YMCA. When she got home, she realized her phone and wallet were missing from her gym bag.

"I got on my bank account and I just starting seeing all these fraudulent charges that I didn't do,” Dr. Miller said.

At first, Dr. Miller says they only made charges on her personal accounts. But then, they hacked into her business accounts too.

So far, the thieves have stolen nearly $10,000.

Police say unfortunately new identity theft cases are reported every day and solving these crimes can take months, even years.

“Tracing these suspects back to an individual is very difficult and with the volume of cases it makes it even harder,” Lt. Clark Wiemeyer with the Wichita Police Department said.

That's why they say it's important to protect yourself and not give anyone the opportunity to steal your identity.

Dr. Miller says she won't be letting her guard down again. She also plans to take her husband's name since strangers have been using hers.

"I haven't legally changed my name but I'm going to because I want a different name associated with the social security number just to protect me for the future,” Dr. Miller said.
