Tonight on Good Question, I get several questions regarding BB guns. Are they legal to carry or even shoot within Wichita city limits? If you can have a conceal and carry permit, are you allowed to conceal and carry a BB gun?
All good questions.
We know it’s illegal to discharge guns within the city limits of Wichita. It’s also illegal to carry a handgun without the proper permit. But what about BB guns? Air rifles and pistols are easy to find and buy. It’s hard to find a young boy in Kansas who doesn’t own a BB gun.
If they would happen to shoot the BB gun within the city of Wichita, it would be a misdemeanor. It’s punishable by a fine of up to $500 and possible jail time. It’s illegal to fire a BB gun within the city, and for good reason. They are dangerous, and they can do severe property damage to cars and homes.
You can’t carry a BB gun within the city either, unless it is in its package or dismantled.
What if you have a conceal and carry permit, allowing you to carry and conceal a firearm?
According to the Kansas Attorney General’s office, a conceal and carry permit does not allow you to carry and conceal BB guns. The permit applies only to firearms. That is something that fires a projectile using combustion or ignition. Since a BB gun uses air and springs, it’s not covered by conceal and carry.
Get caught carrying a BB gun within the city, it’s a misdemeanor with an fine up to $500 and possible jail time.
