"If I had the option to, I would never give it to anybody. I still ask myself, why me and not somebody else," said Nate Winter, a former Wichita firefighter.

The 29-year-old was used to battling fires but now, he is battling to save his own life. In 2009, he was diagnosed with a stage four inoperable brain tumor.

"If a life needed to be saved, I would do my best to save a life. It's my job and that's what I was called upon, and what I wanted to do. Now, it's my life that needs to be saved," said Nate.

He saved lives, much like his own father, Fred, who has been serving in the Wichita Fire Department for 24 years.

"To have your son following in your footsteps, being a firefighter of all things, I was really proud the day he was announced to be a firefighter," said Nate's father.

The two men who have been helping save others, are now asking for help to save Nate.

"I'm asking for the people to come forward and help us, as we've helped them," said Fred. "I don't like to live this way. I want something to happen, and happen soon, because we know that this traditional treatment can only do so much."

Nate's current chemotherapy has stopped the growth of the tumor but doctors said that without a cure, he will not make it.

"One to four years is what we've been told for a prognosis. I've just kept my head up. I pray," said Nate.

He has been accepted to the participate in a treatment in Houston but insurance will not cover that. Now, family and friends have established the "Nathan Winter Life Fund," hoping to pay the nearly $100,000 treatment to save his life.

"I'm hoping that this treatment works so that I can get my job back, that I've always wanted to do, so I can go out and help people," said Nate.

He needs $25,000 by Nov. 1 to start the treatment.
