City Hall security improvements are nearing completion and the final phase will modify public parking beginning on Monday. Because of the security upgrades, the City Hall parking garage will only be accessible to employees and others who have security access cards. City Hall visitors must park in the surface lot south of the garage. There will be 173 parking spaces in the south-side surface lot. Please see attached map.
The City Hall security improvements and parking complex changes stem from longstanding security consultant recommendations. The security consultants said restricted public access to the garage is essential to improve the safety of City Hall visitors and employees, because the garage is adjacent to the City Hall building. Acting on the advice of those consultants, the Wichita City Council approved City Hall security upgrades in 2004 and construction began in 2006. The exterior and atrium improvements cost $3 million. Funding sources included federal grants. Please see attached agenda report.
The 173 public parking spaces result in a net loss of 28 public parking spaces. There are also location changes to handicapped parking though the number of available spaces remains the same. The handicapped spots will be relocated to the south-side surface lot but near the garage and close to the pedestrian entry.
Motorists entering the parking complex will now enter through newly located gates and ticket booths on the west end of the City Hall complex off 3rd and Central. For more information regarding City Hall security improvements and parking changes, please visit www.wichita.gov.
