Expecting mothers go through a lot of medical tests in their nine months of pregnancy. But how do you know which ones are really needed and if they are safe?
Every mom just wants a healthy baby, and whatever that takes, most are willing to do it. But should mothers get every test available done?
Dr. Margaret O’Hara is a Maternal-Fetal Specialist Physician. She cares for many at risk pregnancies. Some tests are simple an noninvasive, such as blood tests that show if a mother is diabetic. Being aware of your blood sugars and controlling them can dramatically improve you and your baby’s health. What about more invasive tests like amniocentesis?
“The risk of miscarriage, 1:300 and 1:500, depends on how they want to proceed,” says Dr. O’Hara.
Dr. O’Hara also says that when it comes to medial testing during a woman’s pregnancy, it is ultimately up to the expecting parents, and they do need to communicate their feelings to their doctor.
