The state health department has lifted its algae warning for Cheney Reservoir in time for the Labor Day holiday.

Campers, boaters, and visitors in general have been staying away from state parks like Cheney. A blue-green algae warning for the lake, and an advisory have proven to be deterrents to visitors. The KDHE has now given Cheney the all clear, but several other lakes are still under warnings, including Milford Lake in northeast Kansas.

State Park Ranger Chris Becker said the change in the public's use of the lake has been noticeable. "Being under this advisory for as long as we have been, our crowds up to this point have not been near as big as what they should have been going into a holiday weekend," Becker said.

The algae is also taking a toll on lake business. Two stores catering to visitors are keeping their doors closed, when they'd normally be open.
It is also common for campers to lay claim, making deposits on their favorite spots two weeks before a holiday weekend. But with the weekend upon us, vacant camping spots are plentiful with some still available next to the beach and water. Others, a few steps further away complete with utility hook-ups are also still up for grabs.

There are just fewer takers than normal for the long holiday weekend.
"It's different," Cheney camper Vickie Shurtz said. "There's not as many people this weekend."

Cheney camper Troy Claphan counted the reasons some may skip a holiday at the lake this Labor Day. "The gas is up, the blue-green algae that's out here, the heat," Claphan said. "It's just cheaper to stay at home."

The lifting of the algae advisory means it is safe to venture back into the water at Cheney Reservoir. You can find a listing of the lake warnings and advisories by clicking here.
