Members of a Reno County Catholic Church saw the extensive damage caused by a fire Thursday morning.
Parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church leaned on each other when they finally got a look inside. About five o'clock yesterday afternoon, the priest discovered the fire inside near the altar of the church.
St. Joe is almost 100 years old sitting in rural Reno County. For many, seeing the damage is heartbreaking.
"It's hard not to cry. I grew up here, married here, was confirmed here. I know it's just a building, but there are a lot of memories here," said church member Bonnie Hilger.
Fire investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire. Most of the damage was contained to the front corner of the sanctuary, but there is extensive smoke damage. Thursday night's confirmation will still take place, not in the church, but at the parish hall.
