17-year-old Shannon Bowmaker died from injuries she suffered in a car accident Wednesday afternoon. Her father says she wanted to be a surgeon.

Bowmaker was a junior at Campus High School. Her father, Herb Bowmaker, says his daughter was a member of the National Honor Society. She was involved in scouting and a member of "Students Against Destructive Decisions". Shannon Bowmaker spent two nights a week volunteering in the emergency room at Via Christi Saint Joseph and was already studying to be an EMT. Shannon's father says she planned on being a surgeon so she could save people.

Shannon was a passenger in a car with three other teenagers. Investigators say the driver of the car ran a stop sign at 47Th street south and Ridge. A pickup driven by a 51-year-old Goddard man crashed into the teens' car. No one else was seriously injured. Investigators said two boys riding in the car were sending text messages and were unable to give authorities an account of what happened.

Funeral services are set for 10:00 a.m. January 18 at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Schulte.
