There were so many child abuse deaths in the Wichita area in 2008 that a group known as the Wichita Child Abuse Fatality Community Response Team formed to help face the problem head-on.
Today, the group unveiled a pretty aggressive program to help prevent abuse before babies ever leave the hospital.
“Three of the eight fatalities involving children last year were less than a year old,” said Jean Hogan from Kansas SRS.
The response team has distributed a DVD called the Period of Purple Crying to both Wesley and Via Christ birth centers.
“Each family will receive a copy of the DVD and a booklet about the Purple Period of Crying. But we will go one step further and ask that each family be required to view the video before being discharged from the hospital,” said Cindy Chapman, Wesley Medical Center.
The program combines 25 years of research on normal infant crying.
