As Kansas prepares for what could potentially be a winter weather event, a look back through the books shows that snow in March is not unheard of.
Of the 20 greatest snowfalls in Wichita’s history, six have occurred in March.
The second biggest snowfall ever recorded in Wichita happened on March 15th and 16th in 1970. Over the course of those two days, 13.6 inches of snow fell.
Twelve inches of snow fell on March 15th and 16th in 1909, and holds the record for the fifth biggest snowfall for the city.
On March 19, 1998, the city was hit with 11.3 inches of snow and ranks eighth all-time in worst snowfalls on record. Ice and slushy conditions caused roadways to become impassable. The deep snow in central and western Kansas left more than 1,700 people in the dark.
