At 1:40 and 1:45 am, Wesley Medical Center happily welcomed the arrival of Wichita's official New Years baby not once, but twice! Their father Ahmad Al-Malaki says he was shocked.
"The nurse, she said 'You know what? I got news for you.' I asked her what kind of news? She said this the first baby in 2009!" Al-Malaki said just 12 hours after their arrival.
Named for the daughter and granddaughter of the Muslim prophet Muhammed, Fatima and Zainb will join their 18 month old brother Abbas at home on Friday.
"He's too jealous right now," his father added. "He's very jealous."
Ahmad isn't the only parent making plans for two bundles of joy. A few floors away, another family is getting to know their twin newborns, which were the last babies born in Wichita in 2008! Mom Dawna Greenup says the late night birth was unexpected.
"We were going to go over to a friend's house before their scheduled C-section on Tuesday. I was in the living room talking with my sister and I was like, my water just broke!" Greenup said Thursday.
Ava Marie and Daniel Dean were born at 10:09 and 10:11 Wednesday night. Mom says she's happy with the twins New Years Eve birthday.
"I was just happy not to be pregnant anymore!" Greenup joked.
While they weren't the first babies of 2009, Ava and Daniel do have a special distinction. They received a gift Thursday from H & R Block in honor of being the last tax deductions born in 2008.
