Gang Related Crimes Down In Wichita

Wichita police report gang violence is down by 30% compared to 2007, but gang detectives say the biggest problem they face is that many gang crimes aren't being reported.

Just a couple of weeks ago 21-year-old Tyrone Squires was shot to death in the 1300 block of Madison. Police say it was a gang shooting.

Detectives say of the six gang-related crimes led up to that deadly shooting, four of them were not reported to police.

"It greatly impacts our investigation. It puts us several hours behind trying to figure out what happened, where it happened," said Lt. Todd Ojile.

Ojile said in the spring police realized there was a spike in gang violence among the Hispanic community. The gang unit worked directly in that area and arrested several gang members.

Since then gang-related crime has dropped significantly. Police ask if you see or hear any type of crime to call 911 or 267-GANG right away.

Attached are two documents regarding gang activity provided by the Wichita Police Department.
