Kansas First Lady Stacy Parkinson is encouraging Kansans to get involved in volunteering.
Parkinson was at Exploration Place in Wichita Thursday evening to kick off a new local organization called Volunteer Kansas.
The overall vision of Volunteer Kansas is to be the number one state in the country for volunteerism. Right now, Kansas is ranked number 8, according to VolunteeringInAmerica.gov. In order to reach the group's 5-year goal it needs to recruit about 70,000 people, ages 16 and older.
Hundreds of volunteers showed up at Exploration Place Thursday to hear Mrs. Parkinson speak. They also got a chance to do a little volunteering themselves, by cleaning Exploration Place's 400 black plastic chairs.
