For many, the new year is a time to lose weight and get in shape. But some gyms say the majority of new members that sweep in January 1st don't stick around very long.

John Madden first joined the gym 12 years ago.

"You feel good, you stay healthy, and you stay younger,” Genesis Health Club member John Madden said.

He says those benefits are what's kept him coming back ever since.

“I average four to five workouts a week,” Madden said.

But Preston Petersen says not all new gym members stick with it as long as Madden.

“Um it's not as much as we'd like to see. I mean one of our biggest challenges as a staff is to engage with those members and keep them coming,” Petersen said.

It's a problem for gyms all across the country. According to ABC World News, one study shows that 80% of new gym memberships become no shows after just two months.

Petersen says a lot of those, can be chalked up to failed New Year's resolutions.

"New Year's is the biggest influx, the month of January. We see the biggest drop around Spring Break time,” Petersen said.

Petersen's advice to help keep up with your gym membership and your resolution is don't expect too much, too soon.

"One thing is people focus on the end result right away and they become overwhelmed and that's another reason they may stop,” Petersen said.

"If I want to lose 100 pounds that's great, but let's just focus on 10 right now,” Petersen said.

Also when it comes to working out, don't go it alone.

“Find somebody else, it doesn't have to be a personal trainer, just find somebody else that has the habits that you want to create,” Petersen said.

John Madden's kept up with is fitness routine for more than a decade, so he offered up some advice for new gym members in the new year.

"Start slow, start easy, and stay with it,” Madden said.
