Police are investigating a string of church break-ins; four in all and they think at least three are connected.

In one church, the burglars broke glass to get inside and then moved through the building, kicking down doors.

The pastor at Hillcrest Bible Baptist Church in Arkansas City says sometime Thursday night or early Friday morning, thieves broke in through a glass framed door downstairs, before making their way into the rest of the church.

Pastor Jimmy McCullough says the thieves who broke into his church did the most damage in the upstairs offices; kicking in doors and ransacking offices.

In the assistant pastor's office, McCullough says they hit pay dirt. The church youth group has recently raised $1,900 to travel to a youth conference in Texas next week.

“Half of it was checks and the checks were still left on the floor, scattered out, they didn't tear them up at least. And there was $899, to be exact, cash that they took,” Pastor McCullough said.

Pastor McCullough says the burglars would have made off with more cash, if it weren't for a 1915 bank safe they just couldn't crack.
"This probably weights a hundred pounds at least, just the door,” Pastor McCullough told us.

Hillcrest isn't the only church broken into this weekend. Over in Winfield, three churches were burglarized including Pastor Dennis Fulbright's place of worship.

“For a church you think of it as robbing God and you would think that something in this world would be sacred but obviously it's not,” Pastor Fulbright said.

Winfield police believe the three church break-ins are related.
