Businesses in a southeast Wichita shopping center had to close up shop this weekend, after copper thieves tripped the building's air conditioning units of copper.

Sometime Friday night, thieves got up onto a building in the Boulevard Plaza shopping center near George Washington and Lincoln and stole copper from all the AC units.

"It's a long building so they just went from store to store to unit to unit taking off pieces of the copper which is not worth that much and is very hard to pedal so it's all for very little,” building owner Howard Brodsky said.

All but one of the businesses were without air conditioning all weekend and most of them just closed.

"It's hard to sell anything when I don't even want to be here,” Spektrum Muzik co-owner Phil Ross said.

Checkers Grocery on east Pawnee was also hit by copper thieves this weekend. Police say the two cases are similar but say it is too soon to tell if they are connected.

The building's owner says he is working to get all the AC units back up and running as soon as possible.
