The town of Sedgwick showed their support for the Sowell family by raising more than $18,000 to help them recover from the October 6th accident.
Taylor Sowell, 18, was killed in Harvey County when a train struck the car she was riding with her husband and brother. On Sunday, the community remembered the mother to 8-month-old Laken and wife to Dylan Sowell.
"Everybody's just opened their hearts and been so generous. I can't even put into words how much we appreciate it," said Stacey Luke, Dylan's mother.
The newlyweds had been together for nearly three years.
"It's going to be tough. I mean so many people loved Taylor, Dylan, and Laken. They were so close to them. They had a huge impact on so many people," said Luke.
At the benefit dinner and auction, friends of the high school sweethearts and community members who heard about the tragedy, came out to show the baby girl that the community cared.
"I think it's a small community. People pull together and do what they can to help the people that need the help," said Judy Shreuner, who attended the fundraiser.
The community hopes that baby Laken will someday know that the community was there for her family and will continue to be there for her in the future.
"If she ever needs help with anything that her mom and dad's hometown is a skip and a jump away and that she can come back for anything that she ever needs," said Kirsten Liby, friend.
A memorial fund has been set up for the family. Donations can be sent to the Taylor Malek Sowell Memorial Fund at Legacy Bank, 514 N. Commercial, Sedgwick, KS 67135.
