Nine weeks after Susan Hoover walked down the aisle, her mom, Melissa Settle, planned a weekend at her home, east of Cheney Lake, to celebrate the nuptials.

"All was good. In minutes a 30-year friendship is gone. People are severely injured. My niece was injured and climbed out of the rubble and found her mother," said Settle's sister, Lani Smith.

Settle and Hoover were severely injured while Settle's long time friend, Mary Lou Hemmy, who was visiting for the weekend, died in the Oct. 9 blast.

"Obviously a shock. I was at work and [dad] said we had received some really tragic news, there was an explosion, and told me it was Lani's sister," said Rachel Smith, Settle's step-niece.

Settle's siblings were shocked to see the devastation left from what investigators believe was caused by a propane leak.

"It's shocking. Absolute devastation," said Lani. "Everything gone and anything that might have something you could've salvaged was burned from the fire."

So now her family is hoping to help pick up some of the pieces left from this tragedy.

"You think about waking up, one day, and you have absolutely nothing. No toothbrush, no bed to lay on, or blankets to keep you warm," said Rachel.

"We'd just like to help all that we can. As a family and as a community, I would hope that we would all do that for anyone that found themselves in this situation," said Lani.

The family has set up the Melissa Glass-Settle Benefit Fund at Intrust Bank to help with expenses for Settle, Hoover, and Hemmy.
