Thousands of people filled up bars and restaurants in downtown Wichita for St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

"We just want everybody else to have a fun safe time tonight. We're just here in case anything else happens," said Juan Murguia, manager at the Brickyard in Old Town.

Murguia was glad to see the outdoor patio filled with patrons but he was also prepared with extra security.

"St. Patty's is known for a drinking holiday, so we just want to anticipate the worst but expect the best," said Murguia. "You'll see a lot of security out just to prevent anything that might or could happen."

Hundreds of people started filling bars earlier in the day to celebrate the holiday. The year 2007 was the last time St. Patrick's Day was on a Saturday.

"It's nice because more people come out and we have a good time. We enjoy it all day long, morning to night," said Amber Steele.

With green beer being the beverage of choice on this holiday, Wichita Police officers hoped people would plan ahead and find a safe way to get home.

"My one concern is just to make sure no body is drinking and driving. We don't want them to get hurt nor do we want them to hurt anybody else," said Sgt. Bart Bruscheen, Wichita Police.
