Ring Around Moon Caused By Ice

A ring around the moon was visible Saturday evening as the moon rose over Kansas.

The KAKE news room took many calls from viewers wondering what it was and what caused the phenomenon. The Moon Ring or Winter Halo as is it also known, is caused by ice crystals that form high in the upper atmosphere.

Similar to the effect of a rainbow, light from the moon passes through those crystals and is refracted. You can read more about the phenomenon here.
