Dozens of small businesses around Wichita participated in "Small Business Saturday" to encourage people to shop at local stores.

"It's important that the general public really supports small businesses because more and more of the small businesses are disappearing due to mass merchandising," said J.R. Koontz, owner of J.R. Koontz Flowers.

J.R. Koontz Flowers participated in the second annual "Small Business Saturday" shopping day by giving discounts to customers.

"We're showing our support to our local economy, our local customers, by enticing them as best we can affordably to get them into our store," said Koontz.

Most shoppers understand the importance of supporting local businesses and said they were spending their money in town.

"Just to keep them from going out of business. if you don't shop there, you're going to be out of business so yeah it's important," said shopper.

"It just supports our community and keeps businesses open and it makes Wichita look good when we do have stores open since our economy isn't so good," said shopper.

Clothing boutiques like Foggy Bottom also participated by giving customers discounts. Owners said they depend on local residents to stay in business.

"Our customers are just the life blood of our business, without them we wouldn't be anywhere. We really, really depend on the people in Wichita and the surrounding area to shop at our store," said Elizabeth George, owner of Foggy Bottom.

According to federal government statistics, small businesses account for 97 percent of the state's employers, and they employ 55 percent of its non-government workforce.

Local business owners plan more deals so shoppers won't forget them this holiday season.

"Small businesses get forgotten and they're really the ones that are the most important to the local economy 'cause they support the community events," said George.
