Nearly $4,000 was raised at a benefit concert to help Mid-Continent Baptist Church rebuild.

A dozen performers donated their time and talents for a praise and worship concert this evening.

About 250 people came out for the benefit concert that was held at the Pawnee Avenue Church of God.

Last month, a fire damaged the Mid-Continent Baptist Church at the corner of Emporia and Kinkaid.

Church members said they were overwhelmed by the love and support from all who have helped.

For 33 years, Mid-Continent Baptist Church has been ministering inside a small, white building at 2201 S. Emporia.

On Jan. 31st, a fire caused $40,000 damage and displaced the congregation.

"It's just a real shock to see what's happened because of that," said Pastor Steve Saunders.

Pastor Saunders got a call around 7:30 a.m. when a neighbor spotted smoke coming out of the basement window. When he arrived, he was shocked to see the damage.

"The walls, the ceilings, everything is blackened with the soot and has that bad smell of fire in it," he said.

Papers in his office were scattered.

A jar with about $50 in change was gone.

Although officials are still investigating this fire, Pastor Saunders suspects this was an intentional fire.

"We began to put the pieces together and realized as the church to the north of us, one block, had been broken into, that our church, as well, had suffered a break in," he said.

A few blocks away, the pastor at Friendship Baptist church has offered the Mid-Continent members a temporary home.

"We've got this big building and a lot of room. We are just pleased to have others come. It's the Lord's building so we want to use it for the Lord's work. We are glad to be able to extend a helping hand," said Pastor Steve Day.

The congregation has a sign that asks people to pray for their church and for the person responsible for the fire. They are hoping to rebuild as soon as the investigation ends.

"The community support that we have had so far has been tremendous. We are looking to keep on," said Pastor Saunders.

Other churches are also helping the congregation. A benefit concert to help Mid-Continent will be held at Pawnee Avenue Church of God, 2611 E. Pawnee, on Feb. 25th at 7 p.m.
